CHIQUITA CANYON TAKES CENTER STAGE WITH FOUND ART
Chiquita Canyon Landfill wanted to find a positive way to partner with the local community. The landfill has been providing solid waste disposal to the Santa Clarita Valley and Los Angeles for 40 years. While they were committed environmental sustainability as evidenced with an on-site 9.2 megawatt facility, a key challenge was the nature of the company’s business.
In working with Chiquita Canyon, a unique partnership was formed with CalArts, a world-renowned art school, to sponsor a “Found Art” scholarship competition exclusively for CalArts students. The scholarship program celebrated creativity by tasking students with creating works of art composed primarily from discarded items found at the landfill. This was designed to also take away the mystery of what goes into the landfill and remove existing misperceptions as to its safety. At the end of the competition, there was a gallery reception showcasing the artists’ works and Chiquita Canyon awarded $8,000 in scholarships to the winners.
In addition to generating significant coverage in local media outlets, the success of the partnership kicked off a long-term program which has continued annually and has helped reshape how people think about landfills.
